Self Defense & Empowerment Training

The Health & Counseling Center joins with the Department of Public Safety to sponsor a Women's Empowerment and Self-Defense Course.

This course empowers women to find and effectively use their voice, increase assertiveness skills, and to take personal responsibility for their own safety. We will be teaching through the nationally recognized R.A.D. Systems of Self-Defense program that goes beyond teaching women physical movements to protect themselves, enabling women to realize their own power and act on instincts we often ignore.

The Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) System is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. It is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.

RAD is not a martial arts program. Our courses are taught by certified RAD instructors and provide you with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire physical defense program for reference and continuous personal growth. The RAD System of Physical Defense is currently being taught at many Colleges and Universities. The growing, widespread acceptance of this system is primarily due to the ease, simplicity and effectiveness of our tactics, solid research, and unique teaching methodology.

The simulation at the end is a challenge by choice; it is an optional participation event.

We currently teach R.A.D. through in person workshops, in an academic course (Term 1, HWP 172), and mini-workshops for your dorm hall, deptartment, and/or organization.
